A hard fought battle at Meadow Park on Saturday resulted in Dalbeattie Star lifting the first silverware of the season in the form of the League Cup after defeating Threave Rovers in the Final with the only goal of the match. Although the woodwork saved the home side on several occasions the Castle Douglas side could not prevent Jak Dingwall from scoring ten minutes from time to win the Cup for Star for the first time in eighteen seasons. The home side tried hard to bring themselves back into contention in the final minutes of the match but they were denied by some stout defending with Dingwalls goal proving to be the decider.
In the South of Scotland League St Cuthbert Wanderers now lead the title race on goal difference following their four goals to one victory over Creetown at St Marys Park, Kirkcudbright. Gary Redpath opened the scoring for Saints after only two minutes play with striker Craig Rudd making it two half an hour later to give the home side a two goal advantage at the break. Rudd made it three twelve minutes after the re-start with Paul McClymont adding number four in the sixty fourth minute. Hogg scored a consolation goal for the visitors with nine minutes left to play but it was all too little too late and Saints claimed an important three points which puts them on top of the table.
Newton Stewart bright start to the season continued with a three goals to nil victory over Nithsdale Wanderers at Sanquhar to maintain their lofty third place in the league table. Goals from Sean Taylor, Graeme Blaine and Andrew McEwan won the three points which now means that the Creesiders have only lost once in their first seven league matches so far this season and that was last week in their match against Crichton where they blew their chances of three points squandering many goal scoring opportunities even after losing tow players through red cards. This now puts the Creesiders onto the fourteen point mark and lying in third place with the opportunity of going top if they take three points from second placed Mid-Annandale on Saturday at Blairmount which is the best start to the season that Newton Stewart have had for many seasons.
Mid-Annandale went into their match against Wigtown and Bladnoch at Lockerbie setting the pace at the top of the league but fell back into second spot on goal difference after being held to a one all draw. Nathan Muir scored the goal for the home side after half an hour to ensure that Mids took at least a point from this contest. Stranraer almost threw away victory at Stair Park in their match against Heston Rovers having held a four goals to one lead were pulled back to four all with the all important winner coming from Richard Jones with only a couple of minutes left to play. Heston finished the match with ten men after Kevin McGeorge had been red carded with their goals coming from Graham Kirkpatrick, Gordon Gibson, Fraser McGhee and Sean Kevin.
Abbey Vales maintained their improved form in their match against Crichton at Hospital Park while the home sides indifferent start to the season continued. Robert McCormack put the visitors ahead after two minutes play with David Frew equalising to make the match all square at the break. Jack Robson added a second while McCormack netted his second and his sides third on the hour mark. Ross Beattie scored for Crichton with twenty five minutes left but Vale held out to take three valuable points which has seen them jump from bottom spot in the table up into eighth spot as a result of two victories in their last two matches. |
